Weeding Women Rockingham

For more than 17 years, Tracy Bryant watched the Kwinana and Rockingham regions grow, and she is proud to have played a major part in their beautification. After working as a casual gardener with the Weeding Women team while gaining her Diploma in Horticulture, Tracy decided to buy a franchise in 1997. She’s never looked back.

Passionately overhauling gardens from Henderson to Byford and south to Golden Bay, Tracy has built a highly successful franchise. She has more than a dozen clients who have been with her since the beginning, plus thousands more satisfied customers for whom she has weeded, fertilised, planted and cultivated.

Born and bred in Perth, Tracy has been a swimming teacher, travelled the world and worked in the corporate world for many years.

“I have loved gardening since I was a little girl and would sit in the office watching unhappy fellow office workers battling to come to work every day,” says Tracy. “I thought to myself, ‘I never want to be like that’.”

It was then she decided to make a change to do something she really loved. “My options were either cooking or gardening, so I chose gardening.”

Tracy says the best thing about the job is the instant reward you get from seeing a happy client who didn’t know what a difference a bit of weeding could make to their home.

“You spend just a few hours on a place and it can go from looking really rough and a right mess to looking fantastic. To know that you have done that with a bit of hard work is very satisfying.”

One of her biggest motivations at Weeding Women has been the business’ founder Colleen Sheehan: “She has been an absolute inspiration to me,” says Tracy. “She is like a pillar – she never gives up and never lets you give up. She is very supportive of all of her franchisees and we have become close friends.”

Early spring is one of Tracy’s busiest times and she says it’s the perfect time to get your garden ready for Christmas festivities and outdoor entertaining. Due to winter rain and the bright sun of spring, weeds will be growing and it’s important to get onto them before they get out of hand. It is also an excellent time to mulch while the soil is still cool and moist from winter but before the weather heats up. The mulch will help protect your garden and get through the drought of summer.

“I have done a lot of planting over the years and it’s so rewarding to see your work as you drive around your neighbourhood. I did a lot of work with the Kwinana Shire on reclaimed land, where we planted thousands of trees. I never thought I would still be doing this 17 years later!

“It is very satisfying to drive down the road and see acres of healthy trees that I help create. From a tiny sapling to a forest – it is nice to know you have been part of such amazing change.”
